Vonn adds super-G title to haul

AMERICAN Lindsey Vonn claimed her third crystal globe in as many days when she won the World Cup super-G title for the third year in a row after victory in Tarvisio, Italy, yesterday.

Vonn mastered the 41 gates of the Artico di Prampero course in one minute 21.75 seconds, 0.23 seconds ahead of compatriot Julia Mancuso and half a second in front of German rival Maria Riesch.

Her victory gave her an unassailable lead of 171 points over second-placed Riesch.

The 26-year-old secured the downhill title on Saturday and the super combined crown on Friday.

"It wasn't easy because the snow was very soft and it was easy to makes mistakes. But I did everything I could under the circumstances and I'm very happy," Vonn said.

"I'm happy to leave Italy with a victory. I would have liked to win the downhill but Anja Paerson was really too strong," Vonn added after claiming her eighth win this season.

Riesch still leads the overall standings but now holds a reduced advantage of 96 points with six races to go.

It was the 41st World Cup victory of Vonn's career, moving her within one of Sweden's Paerson on the all-time list.

Only three women are ahead of Paerson on the all-time wins list: Austria's Annemarie Moser-Proell with 62, Switzerland's Vreni Schneider with 55 and Austria's Renate Goetschl with 46.

In Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, Mario Matt of Austria won his second straight World Cup slalom race yesterday while the two favorites for the discipline title, Ivica Kostelic and Jean-Baptiste Grange, were disqualified for straddling a gate.

Matt, who was fifth after the opening run, finished the Podkoren course in a combined time of 1:49.19 for his 12th career victory. The Austrian also won in Bansko, Bulgaria, last week.

Axel Baeck of Sweden and Nolan Kasper of the United States, who had the fastest second-run time, both earned their first career podium finish as they shared second place, 0.09 behind Matt.

With both Kostelic and Grange failing to score points, the slalom title will be decided at the season-ending race in two weeks. The Croat leads the Frenchman by 36 points.
