Vonn flies to Super-G victory
LINDSEY Vonn continued her extraordinary domination of the Alpine skiing speed events with a comfortable victory in a World Cup Super-G in Italy yesterday.
The American, hot favorite for glory at next month's Vancouver Olympics, made light of going out 18th to glide down the Olympia delle Tofane course in one minute 21.74 seconds.
Switzerland's Fabienne Suter grabbed second in 1:22.41 with Anja Paerson of Sweden third.
Vonn's second Super-G win of the season propelled her back to the top of the overall World Cup standings after previous leader Maria Riesch took too many risks on the turns and finished 15th.
"It was a good run. I made a mistake at the bottom but I'm happy," Vonn, who really powered into the corners, told reporters.
"I have a lot of confidence and hopefully I can do it again (in the downhill) tomorrow."
Bright sunshine greeted the skiers to the jagged peaks of the Dolomites and only a handful of competitors had problems after a couple of minor crashes marred downhill training over the past two days.
The famous five rings which still dominate the buildings of chic Cortina, the host of the 1956 Winter Games, will have concentrated minds on the fast approaching races in Vancouver.
Today's downhill and tomorrow's giant slalom must be navigated first, however, even if Vonn looks almost unstoppable for the downhill such was her ease of victory yesterday.
In Kitbuehel, Austria, Didier Cuche of Switzerland won a men's World Cup super-G race yesterday for his third victory of the season and 12th overall.
Cuche finished the 2,260-meter Streifalm course in 1 minute, 17.94 seconds, beating Michael Walchhofer of Austria by 0.28. Austrian teammate Georg Streitberger took third, another 0.01 behind Cuche.
"It took a long time, but I really enjoy winning here," said Cuche, who became the first Swiss skier to win a super-G in Kitzbuehel. "I got that good feeling from the start of the season back in Wengen last week. I had not pushed to the limits since my crash in Val d'Isere."
Cuche won the season-opening giant slalom in Soelden, Austria, and a downhill in Lake Louise, Alberta.
He earned his third win thanks to a strong finish. He was 0.29 behind Walchhofer going into the lower section but chose the right line for the highest speed.
Carlo Janka of Switzerland trailed Cuche by 1.02 but kept the lead in the overall standings with 769 points. Second-place Benjamin Raich of Austria finished 0.27 behind Janka and has 743 points. Cuche is third with 626.
