Vonn races to super-G lead
AMERICAN skier Lindsey Vonn took the lead of a World Cup super-combined race yesterday after using a strong performance on the bottom section of the course to clock the fastest time in the super-G.
The defending overall World Cup champion is aiming for a second straight victory after winning Saturday's downhill in style on the same Oreiller-Killy course at Val d'Isere, France.
Vonn trailed Daniela Merighetti by .27 seconds at the first time split and .45 on the second, but powered through the bottom section to finish in 1 minute, 18.66 seconds, putting her .20 ahead of the Italian.
Nicole Hosp of Austria, who has won World Cup slalom races before, was third fastest and appears the main threat as she starts .30 behind Vonn in the slalom run later yesterday.
Italy's Johanna Schnarf was fourth fastest, and Margret Altacher of Austria was fifth.
In Alta Badia, Italy, Ted Ligety won his third straight giant slalom race with two solid runs down the steep and icy Gran Risa course to take the overall World Cup lead.
The American was second after the first run behind Cyprien Richard, but the Frenchman lost time during the lower part of the course on the second leg to finish 0.14 seconds behind. Ligety finished with a total time of 2 minutes, 31.99 seconds.
