Weirather claims super-G win ahead of Gut, Vonn

TINA Weirather of Liechtenstein won a slushy super-G in La Thuile, Italy, yesterday ahead of overall World Cup contenders Lara Gut and Lindsey Vonn.

Racing in unusually warm weather, Weirather claimed her first win of the season by finishing 0.57 seconds ahead of Swiss Gut with American Vonn 0.64 back. It was the fifth career win for Weirather, the daughter of two-time Olympic gold medalist Hanni Wenzel and Harti Weirather, who won downhill gold at the 1982 world championships. Vonn’s overall lead ahead of Gut was reduced to 23 points, while in the super-G ranks she holds a 79-point lead ahead of Gut with three races remaining in the discipline this season. Gut won the first of two downhills at La Thuile on Friday with Nadia Fanchini of Italy taking Saturday’s race. Up next is a special parallel slalom city event in Stockholm for men and women tomorrow.
