Weirather races to super-G win

TINA Weirather won the women's super-G yesterday in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, for her first World Cup victory.

Weirather edged Julia Mancuso of the US and Tina Maze of Slovenia, the overall World Cup winner, who tied for second. Maze became the first skier to make 19 podiums in one season.

One of the early starters, Weirather covered the Kandahar course in 1 minute, 19.82 seconds to beat Mancuso and Maze by .12 seconds.

Anna Fenninger of Austria was fourth, .28 seconds back.

Maze collected 80 points for her second place and has 1,924 points overall, taking her closer to becoming the first skier to top 2,000.

Meanwhile, Norway claimed its sixth victory of the Nordic skiing world championships in the women's 4x5-kilometer cross-country relay on Thursday in Val Di Fiemme, Italy.
