Cao stuns Allen on worlds debut

CRUCIBLE Theater debutante Cao Yupeng stunned the Sheffield crowd on Sunday as the Chinese qualifier beat world No. 11 Mark Allen of Northern Ireland 10-6 in the first round of the world championship.

Cao, who turned professional last year, was playing his first season on the main tour and had to win four matches to reach the 32-player main draw of the elite-studded championship which runs until May 7.

The 21-year-old Cao, who showed no signs of nerves on his worlds debut, will face either compatriot Ding Junhui or Ryan Day of Wales in the last 16.

"It was a big challenge and a big win for my career," said the winner.

"The atmosphere here is fabulous. I have never felt this kind of excitement before," Cao said of the famous Theater where the championship has been staged since 1977 and the current contract runs until 2015.

Another Chinese, Liang Wenbo took defending champion John Higgins the distance before losing 9-10 in their opener.

Yesterday, record-breaking teenager Luca Brecel's maiden championship ended in defeat by Scotland's Stephen Maguire.

At 17 years and 45 days, the Belgian rising star became the youngest player in the history of the tournament, but despite making a century in Sunday's first session he lost 5-10 to world No. 7 and former semifinalist Maguire.

However, veteran Marco Fu of China's Hong Kong was in danger of suffering a humiliating first-round drubbing against Matthew Stevens after falling 1-8 behind to the Welshman, twice a World Championship runner-up.

Also, Australia's Neil Robertson, the 2010 champion, beat Ken Doherty, the 1997 winner, 10-4 on Sunday having led the Irishman 7-2 overnight.

Robertson, who lost to eventual finalist Judd Trump in the first round last year, said: "It's nice playing this year without being the defending champion. It's nice coming in under the radar."

Seven-time champion Stephen Hendry, who made a maximum 147 break, converted an 8-1 lead over Stuart Bingham into a 10-4 win to set up a second round clash against fellow Scotsman Higgins.
