Carter sets up Burnett encounter at Masters
ALI Carter pulled off a minor surprise last night by beating tournament favorite and world No. 8 Mark Selby 6-2 at the Shanghai Masters to set up a final with James Burnett.
Englishman Carter rallied from an early 0-2 deficit against his compatriot to seal his passage into the championship clash.
Carter, the 2008 world championship runner-up, had also recovered from trailing 1-4 to beat Matthew Stevens 6-4 on the final black of their semifinal on Friday.
Earlier yesterday Burnett capitalized on an error-strewn display from Jamie Cope to record a 6-1 semifinal victory at the Shanghai Grand Stage.
Making his first semifinal appearance in an 18-year career, Burnett raced into an early three-frame lead against his more favored opponent.
The first and third frames were pretty straightforward affairs, with the underdog comfortably winning 107-22 and 64-9.
Had Cope managed to win a tightly-fought second frame then the complexion of this semifinal would have been very different, but Burnett prevailed 65-53.
With the match a best-of-11 affair, Cope must have been more than aware of the importance of not allowing his less illustrious rival to take a four-frame lead into the interval but the world No. 17 appeared to be struggling with the role of favorite.
Burnett easily jumped to a 5-0 lead before Cope prevailed to ensure he avoided the embarrassment of a semifinal whitewash.
