Debutante Lu outclasses veteran Fu at worlds

China鈥檚 Lu Haotian made light of his being the lowest ranked player in the world championships with a memorable 10-5 defeat of two-time semifinalist Marco Fu on his debut.

The 20-year-old 鈥 ranked 68th in the world 鈥 didn鈥檛 waver after opening up a 6-3 advantage and never allowed experienced China, Hong Kong cueman Fu, 40, back into the match. Lu鈥檚 victory ensures there will be two Chinese players in the second round 鈥 2016 finalist Ding Junhui opens his campaign later yesterday against compatriot Xiao Guodong. Lu 鈥 based in Sheffield, home to the championships historic venue 鈥楾he Crucible Theatre鈥 鈥 will play the winner of the clash between Barry Hawkins and Stuart Carrington. Crowd favorite and five-time world champion Ronnie O鈥橲ullivan鈥檚 second-round opponent will be Ali Carter who produced a superb comeback to beat 2006 world champion Graeme Dott 10-8. O鈥橲ullivan 鈥 who had to battle hard to come through his first-round clash with Stephen Maguire 鈥 beat Carter in two of his world finals in 2008 and 2012. Two-time finalist Mark Stevens lost 3-10 to Kyren Wilson.
