Ding, Xiao in Shanghai semis

Ding Junhui joined rookie Xiao Guodong in the semifinals of the Shanghai Masters last night after comprehensively beating world champion Neil Robertson of Australia 5-2.

Ding, who outlasted British fifth seed Shaun Murphy in nine frames in the quarterfinals, became the second Chinese to reach the last four after Xiao pulled off a surprise 5-4 victory over Mark Davies to reach his first semifinal at a ranking tournament.

Ding will take on England’s Barry Hawkins who edged out compatriot Mark Selby 5-4 in a last-eight match that ended around 11pm at Shanghai Indoor Stadium.

Earlier, Xiao delighted the home fans after rallying from 2-4 down to oust Davies, with the final frame providing some drama as the Englishman was presented with a chance to recover from 0-61 down with 67 left on the table.

However, he accidentally ended up potting two reds at the same time which left him needing snookers from which he never recovered.

Things, however, were easier for Michael Holt who enjoyed a straightforward 5-1 win over British compatriot Kyren Wilson as he made his first semifinal 17 years after turning pro.

Holt produced breaks of 85 and 64 before a run of 80 in the final frame sealed the victory. He will meet Xiao in the last four.
