Ding and Xiao advance at the Shanghai Masters
China’s Ding Junhui earned a placed in the round of 16 at the Shanghai Masters yesterday, defeating David Gilbert 5-2.
Ding closed out a scrappy final frame in which both players missed several opportunities.
Ding started quickly and a break of 129 gave him a 3-1 lead. He won the next frame with a break of 106 to put Gilbert in a 4-1 hole.
China’s Xiao Guodong defeated Stephen Maguire 5-2.
Breaks of 89, 54 and 69 helped Xiao to a solid victory.
Xiao said he felt comfortable throughout the match.
“It’s more about my opponent’s bad performance, because I wasn’t playing that well,” Xiao said. “He didn’t put me under pressure during the first four frames so I was really relaxed.”
Martin Gould came from behind to stop Ricky Walden 5-3, while Mark King posted breaks of 106 and 70 to eliminate Graeme Dott 5-3.
King was gracious in victory.
“It’s nice to still be in the tournament,” King said. “Graeme was below his normal standard. I struggled in patches but made a couple of good breaks.”
Also, No. 100 ranked Kyren Wilson enjoyed the best result of his young career with a 5-1 victory over Stuart Bingham to reach the last 16.
“Stuart didn’t play as well as usual and let me off quite a few times,” said Wilson, 21, who now meets Marco Fu. “I did what I had to do and stole a lot of frames. It’s my first ranking event so I’m pleased with my performance.”
Meanwhile, Mark Selby defeated China’s Lin Shuai 5-2 in a late match and Ryan Day knocked out Mark Allen 5-1.
