Ding eases into Masters semis
DING Junhui overcame Michael Holt 5-3 at the Shanghai Masters last night, setting up a semifinal clash against Stephen Maguire.
“I played well. We both did at the beginning,” said Ding. “I committed a few errors in the latter part, but Holt did not make good use of them.”
Ding took a 2-0 lead 30 minutes into the game at Shanghai Indoor Stadium before a drop in accuracy allowed Holt to seize a few open chances to knot the score at 2-2.
The local favorite found his mojo back after the break, taking a 3-2 lead. However, he had to make six attempts before solving a second snooker he encountered in the next frame, allowing Holt to tie it 3-3.
Ding, however, didn’t leave many chances for the Englishman in the next two frames as he eased to victory.
He will face Scotland’s Maguire in the best-of-11 semifinals today. Maguire beat Welshman Michael White 5-1.
The much-expected Ding-Ronnie O’Sullivan quarterfinal failed to materialize after The Rocket was eliminated 2-5 by compatriot Holt in the second round on Thursday. Despite overwhelming support from local fans, O’Sullivan said he committed too many mistakes, and did not deserve to win.
Also yesterday, world No. 2 Stuart Bingham beat fellow Englishman Allister Carter 5-1. Carter earned the quarterfinal spot by defeating Scottish world No. 5 John Higgins 5-2 on Thursday. “I feel exhausted and played terrible today,” said Carter. “It’s disappointing to stop at the quarterfinal.”
World No. 1 Mark Selby of England defeated Wales’ Ryan Day 5-3 to set up a semifinal against Bingham.
