Ding soars, Higgins out
China’s Ding Junhui set up a tantalizing last-eight clash with world champion Neil Robertson at the Shanghai Masters after seeing off British fifth seed Shaun Murphy 5-4 in a close match last night.
The final frame, which the 11th-seeded Ding won 83-30, finished around 11.15pm as the audience at the Shanghai Indoor Stadium rose to applaud the local hero.
Australia’s Robertson also had a tough battle on hand, coming through with a 5-3 victory over Briton Mark King.
The day had, however, begun with a surprise as former world champion John Higgins crashed out, losing 1-5 to Englishman Mark Davis.
Scot Higgins, the defending champion, joined a number of big names, including Judd Trump and Stephen Maguire, in failing to reach the business end of the tournament.
Davis will play Xiao Guodong in the quarterfinals after the Chinese player saw off Peter Lines 5-3. There was another upset in the afternoon session as Kyren Wilson beat Marco Fu of China’s Hong Kong 5-3.
Wilson will meet Michael Holt next after he followed up on his upset of Trump by outlasting Michael Gould 5-4.
Elsewhere, Barry Hawkins drubbed Ryan Day 5-2 and Mark Selby edged Robert Milkin 5-4 to complete the quarterfinal line-up.
