Higgins goes on a binge after defeat
JOHN Higgins was found in an inebriated state and asleep in a Beijing taxi yesterday afternoon, a day after the Scottish world champion lost to Peter Ebdon 4-5 at the China Open.
Higgins arrived at the hotel in a taxi on his own but had to helped out by the hotel staff. He did not even pay the cab fare.
The 37-year-old Higgins was leading the wildcard holder Ebdon 3-1 in the second round on Thursday night but lost the deciding game after being tied by the English.
Higgins later left the Beijing University Student's Gymnasium venue without attending the press conference after the game. He did not return to the hotel until he showed up drunk in the taxi at around noon.
The former world No.1 had to be helped out of the taxi by the hotel staff. He did however walk back to his hotel room unaided.
"He walked upstairs on his own, but he didn't pay the taxi fare though. The hotel paid it for him," a witness told sina.com yesterday.
Meanwhile, Ding Junhui overcame Allister Carter 5-2 yesterday to set up a semifinal against the winner of Neil Robertson and Ebton. Defending champion Judd Trump was eliminated 3-5 by Stephen Lee, while Stephen Maguire fluked a remarkable respotted black in the deciding frame to beat Ronnie O'Sullivan 5-4.
