Higgins off to a flier in Shanghai

Four-time world champion John Higgins racked up back-to-back centuries to launch the defense of his Shanghai Masters title with a 5-1 victory over fellow Briton Mike Dunn at Shanghai Indoor Stadium yesterday.

The Scot, who won last year with a dramatic 10-9 win over Judd Trump after trailing 2-7 in the final, encountered few problems in sweeping aside Dunn in the first round.

Dunn knocked in a 74 the third frame to close to 2-1, but Higgins slammed the door shut with scores of 100, 107 and 42 to seal a clash with Mark Davis or Ali Carter in the last 16.

While Higgins was having a stroll, 2005 world champion Shaun Murphy of England came up against a tough opponent in China’s Yu Delu, finally managing to eke out a narrow 5-4 victory to reach the second round.

Murphy rolled in breaks of 116 and 77 in mopping up the first two frames only for Yu to restore parity with knocks of 80 and 72.

The next four frames were split with Yu blowing the chance to win it when he snookered himself on the final red behind the black when looking poised to clear.

“I’m relieved more than anything,” said Murphy. “There were parts of the game where I played very well. We both had chances in the last frame so I was pleased to fall over the line.”

In the wildcard round, Cao Yupeng beat Zhou Yuelong 5-4 while Xiao Guodong overcame 13-year-old Yuan Sijun with a highest break of 122.
