O鈥橲ullivan socks it to Steadman at worlds
With its players donning waistcoats, bow ties, and smart trousers for matches, snooker prides itself on being one of the smartest sports around.
Ronnie O鈥橲ullivan briefly shattered that image at the world championships in Sheffield, England. O鈥橲ullivan, snooker鈥檚 biggest box-office draw, caused a stir in his first-round match debutante Craig Steadman on Tuesday when he removed a new pair of shoes that were giving him discomfort and started playing in his socks.
However, that was in breach of the dress code, and O鈥橲ullivan ended up borrowing a pair from tournament director Mike Ganley. The five-time world champion described them as 鈥渟tinky old shoes鈥, but said yesterday, 鈥測ou know what, they felt great鈥.
Officials are considering whether O鈥橲ullivan should be fined for a breach of dress code, with rules stating players must ensure they dress in 鈥渟mart and appropriate鈥 fashion. O鈥橲ullivan won 10-3 and next faces either Matthew Stevens or Mark Williams.
