Robertson makes final 16

World No. 1 Neil Robertson kept his hopes of a third consecutive China triumph alive, defeating local hope Wang Yuchen 5-1 at the Shanghai Masters yesterday.

Wang, who received a wild card into the tournament, presented a tricky challenge after eliminating Joe Perry yesterday. But Robertson sailed past him with top breaks of 122 and 73.

“He must be a very good player as he beat Joe, but he struggled a bit today,” said Robertson, who hails from Australia. “I used my experience and it was a comfortable win in the end.

“He’s got a lot of talent and hopefully we’ll see his potential in the future,” he added.

Robertson is seeking a trio of ranking titles in China after winning the China Open in April and the Wuxi Classic in June.

Robertson will play either Mark King or Graeme Dott in the final 16.

Mark Davis kept his hot streak going with a 5-2 win over Ali Carter.

Davis, winner of the 6-Red World Championship in Thailand and the General Cup in Hong Kong during the past two weeks, went ahead 3-0 with top breaks of 122 and 102.

Carter, who won the Shanghai Masters in 2010, fought back to 3-2, only for Davis to claim the next two frames.

“I started really well and should have been 4-0 up,” Davis said. “Ali came back into the match although I didn’t really miss much. I was delighted to beat him because we all know how good he is.

“I’d love to win a ranking event and I think I’m good enough to do it,” added Davis.

Davis said he was looking forward to his next match against John Higgins.

“John Higgins is one of the best players of all time,” Davis said. “I’ve played well against him recently and beaten him a couple of times so it should be a good game.”

Also, Barry Hawkins thrashed David Grace 5-0.

Mark King beat China’s Zhu Yinghui 5-1 with a top run of 85 in the wild card round.
