10-man Bolton rallies to draw with Brums
BOLTON Wanderers fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Birmingham City in the English Premier League yesterday and partly save the blushes of their goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen who was sent off for a senseless foul in the first half.
The Finland international slapped Birmingham's Roger Johnson as he was about to apologize for a clumsy challenge, after 37 minutes, but the keeper instead whacked him in the face and was shown an immediate red card by the referee.
Johnson had put Birmingham ahead after four minutes with his first goal for the club, and the visitors, unbeaten in their opening two games, doubled their lead when Craig Gardner scored from point-blank range five minutes after halftime.
Bolton, also unbeaten after its first two games, began its fightback when Johnson was penalized for a 71st-minute foul on Kevin Davies who struck home his 100th league goal with a well-struck penalty into the roof of Ben Foster's net.
Ten minutes later Robbie Blake scored his first goal for Bolton, against his old club, with a free-kick. Both teams have five points from three games.
In other action yesterday, Liverpool was at home to West Bromwich Albion, Sunderland was playing Manchester City and Aston Villa was hosting Everton.
On Saturday, Wayne Rooney ended his five-month goal famine for Manchester United while Chelsea maintained its perfect start to the season despite its incredible scoring spree being stemmed by Stoke City.
After opening its season with consecutive 6-0 wins, Chelsea had to make do with a 2-0 victory over Stoke - Florent Malouda and Didier Drogba on target after Frank Lampard had a first-half penalty saved.
Lampard and Chelsea skipper John Terry were promptly ruled out of England's Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Switzerland. Lampard has a hernia that will require surgery next week while Terry injured his hamstring.
Rooney tucked away a penalty before halftime in United's 3-0 win against West Ham United, his first goal since scoring against Bayern Munich in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinal in March.
Rooney also set up United's second for Nani with a clever layoff before Dimitar Berbatov completed the scoring at Old Trafford to put United on seven points along with Arsenal and two behind Chelsea.
