4 Shanghai soccer celebrities arrested for match fixing

FOUR former soccer stars of the Shanghai International Football Club have been arrested for taking 8 million yuan (US$1.27 million) in bribes in 2003, the Morning Express reported today.

Qi Hong, Shen Si, Jiang Jin and Li Ming allegedly took the money to fix the final game of the 02/03 China Football League First Division.

In the controversial match between Shanghai International and Tianjin Teda, the four players were paid to make sure they lose the game to Teda. As a result, Teda beat the International 2-1 to secure its top position for another season.

Shen, 39, and Qi, 36 became coaches after retirement. They were detained by Liaoning Province police in October 2010.

Zhang Yifeng, the former boss of Teda, was also in police custody.
