7-a-side amateur event

THE inaugural Shanghai Super Football League, a local amateur 7-a-side tournament, will be held from March to December next year, its promoter Shanghai PPsports Development Company announced yesterday.

The new league was developed from the previous Shanghai Shenhua Fans League and UPBOX youth league. UPBOX is a football-themed project PPsports launched in 2015 in Shanghai, aimed at attracting funds to build pitches and organize competitions for amateur and grassroots football. The 2017 SSFL will feature 32 teams, playing a total of 374 matches in round-robin and playoff stages. UPBOX currently operates 33 football pitches around Shanghai, and the number will be increased to 46 in 2017. The company recently completed the purchase of Sunfun FC, a newly promoted team to China League Two — the third-tier league. Representing Shanghai in 2017, Sunfun will be coached by former national team defender Cheng Liang.
