AS Roma beats 10-man Juventus 2-1

JOHN Arne Riise's injury-time winner lifted AS Roma over 10-man Juventus 2-1 in the Serie A yesterday.

Alessandro Del Piero gave Juventus the lead in the 51st minute, and Francesco Totti equalized with a penalty in the 68th.

Then Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon was sent off in the 83rd for a professional foul on defender Riise outside the area when he was through on goal. Riise took advantage in injury time by heading home David Pizarro's cross past reserve goalie Alex Manninger to extend Roma's unbeaten run to 11 games.

The win left Roma in third place with 38 points, while Juventus stayed fifth with 33. Inter Milan led with 46, and AC Milan had 40.

"It was a very important goal," Totti said. "We're delighted with these three points, especially against a rival like Juventus."

In the day's only other match, Catania beat Parma 3-0 with goals from Giuseppe Mascara, Jorge Martinez and Takayuki Morimoto. Despite the win, Catania remained in the relegation zone.

There were few clear chances in the first half between Roma and Juventus, and after eight minutes Roma striker Luca Toni limped off with a knee injury.

"It was cold, but it wasn't because he didn't warm up well enough," Totti said. "The pitch was heavy tonight."

Zdenek Grygera's cross was headed just wide by Amauri, while Mirko Vucinic shot into the side netting with Roma's best chance of the first half.

Six minutes into the second period, Juventus took the lead. Diego's attempted throughball was deflected off Juan and Del Piero hit a low volley past Roma goalkeeper Julio Sergio.

Roma struggled to respond until the 68th when Totti scored his 10th of the season after Grosso fouled Taddei.

Juventus' Claudio Marchisio dragged a shot wide in the 75th from the edge of the area and Amauri forced Sergio into a sharp save with a powerful header three minutes later.

With eight minutes remaining, Juventus went down to 10 men, and in injury time Riise was left unmarked to head past Manninger.

"The team spirit is important," Totti said. "We are developing as a team result after result."
