AS Roma beats Parma 2-1, back to Serie A top

AS Roma returned to the top of the Serie A ahead of Inter Milan's game by beating Parma 2-1 yesterday following goals from Francesco Totti and Rodrigo Taddei.

Roma has 74 points, one more than defending champion Inter, which plays Lazio at Rome's Olympic Stadium today.

Davide Lanzafame pulled a goal back for Parma in the 81st minute. Parma had midfielder Luis Jiminez sent off in the 88th.

"I think Lazio will be even more determined than Parma was today," Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi said. "The order of matches is what it is. Inter played first on some weekends and so have we. It's the way it goes. It is not nice, it makes life uncomfortable and, for sure, I will be supporting Lazio tomorrow."

In yesterday's late match, Ronaldinho scored a penalty 12 minutes from the final whistle to give AC Milan a 1-0 win over Fiorentina.

Neither team moved in the standings; AC Milan is third with 67 points and Fiorentina ninth with 46.

"We are another step nearer automatic qualification for the Champions League," Milan coach Leonardo said. "But we also played the type of good football we wanted to play.

"The players are feeling it," he said. "They had to work hard for this win as we were playing a tough side which plays the same type of football as us."

Totti scored in the fifth minute, running on to De Rossi's through pass and lifting the ball over goalkeeper Antonio Mirante.

Totti then linked up with Mirko Vucinic to release Jeremy Menez, but the French winger shot wide.

"We were a bit slow moving the ball around in the first half," Roma coach Claudio Ranieri said. "We missed David Pizarro, who is important for keeping up our tempo."

Parma was unable to find any rhythm and Roma's defense limited its opponent's attack to long-range shots. Roma goalkeeper Julio Sergio twice stopped efforts from the edge of the area - first from Jonathan Biabiany and then from Francesco Valiani.

Totti came close to doubling the lead in the 54th but hit the post.

Lanzafame brought another sharp save from Sergio in the 67th. De Rossi tried to let the ball roll out for a corner, but Luca Antonelli tackled him, pulled it back for Lanzafame and Sergio blocked the shot over the bar.

"I have to say Parma played very well and were very determined," Ranieri said. "We have done what we needed to, though, and we have to keep doing this. Last week against Sampdoria we played well, but things went against us. Today they went our way."

Taddei scored in the 75th when substitute Luca Toni freed Totti, who crossed to the far post for Taddei to head home.

However, Lanzafame beat Roma's defense to the ball and headed Biabiany's cross past Sergio six minutes later.

Jiminez earned a second yellow card to ensure it was Roma that finished stronger, with Julio Baptista hitting a low shot that Mirante pushed away for a corner.

In Milan, neither side had much to play for and it was reflected in a lackluster first half.

Fiorentina midfielder Riccardo Montolivio did force Dida into a low save in the third minute, but it wasn't until Ronaldinho drew two saves from Fiorentina keeper Sebastien Frey shortly before halftime that a goal was threatened.

After the break Ronaldinho forced Frey into action again when he whipped in a freekick.

Later he created an opening for Clarence Seedorf, but the Dutch midfielder opted to blaze a shot over the bar, rather than pass to the unmarked Klaas Jan Huntelaar.

Eventually Ronaldinho did find the net, slotting home the penalty after Per Kroldrup brought down Marco Borriello.

Milan was reduced to 10 men in the 88th when captain Massimo Ambrosini tripped Alberto Gilardino to earn a second yellow card.
