AVB promises a trophy this year

SHANGHAI SIPG manager Andre Villas-Boas has promised to deliver a trophy this season.

“It’s very important for us to shorten the distance between the top (teams) and to win trophies,” the former Chelsea coach said at the club’s 2017 Season Mobilization Meet yesterday.

“I’ve promised our president (Chen Xuyuan) that at the end of the season he would sleep with one trophy.

“I hope that me and the players can give this special night to him at the end of the season.”

The Portuguese was speaking after the team made the trip yesterday to the Yangshan Deepwater Port, which is managed by the club’s owners, Shanghai International Port Group.

Villas-Boas was impressed by the trip to the port.

“It was the first time (for my coaching team) to visit the port. The size of the port is incredible, which showed the power of SIPG,” he said.

He thanked the owners for their support, including signing big-name players.

“I think it’s a good time for myself, representing the team, to thank the group for all the financial effort they have done at the beginning of the season.

“Now I think it’s up to us to make the difference in the pitch to make sure that we reach our objectives, everybody’s dream in football of winning.”

Shanghai International Port Group president Chen Xuyuan did not hide his desire of winning a championship after the state-owned company invested big in building a squad which is estimated to be worth around 76 million euros.

“We bought Oscar only to win a championship,” Chen said. “After Dario Conca (got injured), we did a lot of comparison, and thought that Oscar would be a good replacement. He has more of an attacking style compared to Conca.”

Chen said besides the three titles — Chinese Super League, China FA Cup and Asian Champions League — it desired, the club was also keen to develop its youth teams and cultivate local talents.

“I’m looking forward to see a domestic coach sitting in Villas-Boas’ position in the future,” said Chen.

“We invested 50 million yuan (US$7.27 million) in youth teams last year. Some of our youth players are playing in Brazil. The club’s market value should also be explored in 2017.”

SIPG also announced that it had extended the sponsorship contract with SAIC Motor Group yesterday. No financial details were released but it is believed to be not less than 150 million yuan per year.

SIPG’s first match of the Chinese Super League season will be against Changchun Yatai on March 3 at Shanghai Stadium. But before that, it will play two AFC Champions League matches this month.

Oscar, SIPG’s 60-million-euro signing from Chelsea, helped the side to reach the group stage of the AFC Champions League last week with a goal on debut in the play-offs against Thai side Sukhothai FC.

The team finished third in CSL last season — 12 points behind six-time winners Guangzhou Evergrande.
