Afellay joins Barca, Keane eyes exit
NETHERLANDS midfielder Ibrahim Afellay completed his transfer to Barcelona from PSV Eindhoven when he signed a 4-1/2 year contract yesterday.
Barca sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta told a news conference in Barcelona that the 24-year-old would be the only player brought in during the January transfer window and the Spanish champion's squad was now complete.
PSV received three million euros (US$3.9 million) for Afellay and the attacking midfielder's new contract includes a buyout clause worth 100 million euros, Barcelona said on its website.
The Dutch club would also get an unidentified percentage of any future transfer fee if Afellay was sold on, the statement added.
Afellay, who is the latest in a long line of Dutch players at the Catalan club, will wear the No. 20 shirt. He will be eligible to make his first appearance for Barcelona in the La Liga match at home to Levante on January 2.
"He is a player who has the characteristics of FC Barcelona," Zubizarreta said. "He can play in every position in the center of the pitch, is in superb physical condition and of an age that mixes youth with experience."
Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur striker Robbie Keane is searching for a new club in the January transfer window after being squeezed out of the team.
With Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Rafael van der Vaart the preferred forward options, Keane has started only two English Premier League matches this season. His only goal came in a League Cup loss to Arsenal.
Keane joined Spurs in 2002 after stints at Leeds United, Inter Milan, Coventry City and Wolverhampton Wanderers. After being lured to Liverpool in the 2008 offseason, Keane was a flop at Anfield and was re-signed by Spurs six months later.
"Robbie would like to move and he wants to play - he is a boy who has played all his career," Spurs manager Harry Redknapp said in London yesterday.
"He is not used to not playing. He is still a top player and would grace most clubs."
Birmingham City has been touted as a destination for Keane after the central England club prioritized the need to sign an experienced striker in January.
