After tears, Roma keeper to miss month
AFTER being reduced to tears in the final minutes of AS Roma's 1-2 loss to Brescia because of the pain from an injury, goalkeeper Julio Sergio has been diagnosed with ligament damage in his right ankle and could miss a month.
With Roma already having used all three of its substitutions in Wednesday's match, Julio Sergio was forced to play on despite suffering in visible pain.
Medical tests yesterday revealed the extent of the injury, which will keep the Brazilian out of the game against European champion Inter Milan on Saturday.
Up-for-sale Roma, last season's runner-up, has yet to win this term and felt luck was truly against it when the Brazilian went down clutching his ankle after a late challenge he was booked for.
After five minutes of treatment the goalkeeper gingerly got to his feet and was told to play on during the lengthy injury time because Claudio Ranieri had used all his substitutes.
It was the end to another frustrating night for Roma, which thought it was denied at least two clear penalties and believed Philippe Mexes won the ball outside the box when a spotkick was awarded to the hosts.
Ranieri worked wonders steering cash-strapped Roma to the brink of almost snatching the scudetto off Inter last season but media speculation is already linking former Italy coach Marcello Lippi with his job. Roma sporting director Daniel Prade dismissed the speculation.
In Milan, Diego Milito put a forgettable month behind him by grabbing his first goals of the season to send champion Inter Milan clear at the top of Serie A with a 4-0 romp over Bari.
Former Inter hero Zlatan Ibrahimovic also grabbed his first league goal for AC Milan before Sergio Floccari equalized to seal a 1-1 draw for host Lazio in the fourth round of matches.
