Aguero grabs late winner for City
Bristol City suffered stoppage-time heartbreak in its League Cup semifinal at Manchester City on Tuesday but played better than most Premier League teams that visit the Etihad Stadium, according the home side鈥檚 manager Pep Guardiola.
The second-tier visitors had taken the lead with a penalty before the break in the first leg clash and then held on for dear life after Kevin De Bruyne levelled for the hosts. Sergio Aguero鈥檚 last-gasp goal gave City a 2-1 advantage heading into the return game in two weeks鈥 time.
The late strike was a gut-wrenching blow for visiting manager Lee Johnson, whose team had already dumped four top flight sides out of the competition, but his opposite number in the dugout had words of consolation at full time.
鈥淧ep Guardiola said to me that we played better than most of the Premier League teams that come to Man City,鈥 Johnson told Sky Sports.
鈥淲e鈥檒l take an awful lot from it and learn a lot. It is not over. It will be an interesting game at Ashton Gate.
鈥淭he away goal was very important. We tried to score and certainly didn鈥檛 park the bus. The lads have to go home and think we can kick on form this performance.鈥
Manchester City, which is unbeaten and 15 points clear in the Premier League, fell behind when defender John Stones dived into a rash challenge on Bobby Reid, who dispatched the penalty.
The visitors鈥 lead lasted until the 55th minute but after De Bruyne鈥檚 leveller it was one-way traffic as they defended bravely in the face of a City onslaught.
In Spain, Victor 鈥淰itolo鈥 Machin and Luciano Vietto scored on their debuts as Atletico Madrid and Valencia cruised into the Copa del Rey quarterfinals.
Vietto scored three times, including one from near midfield, to help Valencia rout Las Palmas 4-0 and advance 5-1 on aggregate. Vitolo scored his first goal for Atletico as it defeated third-division team Lleida 3-0 and advanced 7-0 on aggregate. Yannick Carrasco and Kevin Gameiro also got on the scoresheet for Atletico, which was without most of its regular starters.
Vitolo was making his second appearance for Atletico since returning from a loan to Las Palmas. He was signed by Atletico last offseason but couldn鈥檛 play until now because the Spanish club was temporarily banned by FIFA from registering new players.
