Alba extends Barca contract until 2020
BARCELONA fullback Jordi Alba has agreed to a new contract that will tie him to the club until 2020, the Catalan side confirmed yesterday.
The 26-year-old Spain international has been a valuable member of the side that faces Juventus in the UEFA Champions League final on Saturday as it looks to complete a treble with the La Liga title and the Copa del Rey already in the bag.
“Barcelona has arrived at an agreement with Jordi Alba for the renewal of his contract until June 30, 2020,” a club statement read. “His buyout clause will be 150 million euros (US$164.48 million). He will sign the contract in the coming days.”
Alba was released by the Barcelona youth academy but went on to prove himself at Valencia before he was brought back in 2012. He had two years to run on his existing deal.
Meanwhile, Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta has played down concerns he could miss the Champions League final with a calf problem picked up in last weekend’s Copa del Rey final win over Athletic Bilbao.
Iniesta was replaced by Xavi Hernandez early in the second-half of a 3-1 victory.
“I had a few pains and nothing more,” Iniesta said. “It hasn’t passed through my head that I won’t be there on Saturday.”
