Alli sparkles as Spurs ease past 10-man Newcastle

Tottenham Hotspur got its English Premier League campaign on track with a clinical 2-0 win at 10-man Newcastle United yesterday after Dele Alli scored one goal and helped create the other at St James鈥檚 Park.
Having eased back into the top flight from the second-tier Championship, Newcastle held its own against last season鈥檚 EPL runner-up in the first half but succumbed after Jonjo Shelvey was sent off in the 48th minute.
Shelvey got his marching orders for stomping on Alli and Spurs duly took advantage as the England midfielder, who pulled all the strings for the visitors, broke the deadlock on the hour when he steered in a great cross by Christian Eriksen.
Alli, who helped Eriksen set up the other for Ben Davies in the 70th, made light of Shelvey鈥檚 petulant reaction.
鈥淚鈥檓 sure he鈥檒l be disappointed,鈥 Alli told Sky Sports.
鈥淚t was important we stayed professional. I don鈥檛 want to talk about it too much. I鈥檝e been pulled up for my temper before but today we had to keep our cool. There was no need to react.鈥
Newcastle, whose fans incessantly booed their former midfielder Moussa Sissoko now playing for Spurs, missed its best chance straight after Shelvey鈥檚 dismissal as goalkeeper Hugo Lloris denied Dwight Gayle with a fine save.
Harry Kane, last season鈥檚 top scorer in the EPL with 29 goals, missed a sitter at the other end before Alli slid in at the far post and beat Robert Elliot with a fine finish. The influential Eriksen and livewire Alli carved open Newcastle鈥檚 defense with a lightning move 10 minutes later, presenting Davies with a simple finish from seven meters.
Newcastle winger Christian Atsu said the temperamental Shelvey had apologized to his teammates afterwards. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 football,鈥 the Ghanaian said. 鈥淗e鈥檒l learn from his mistakes. He鈥檚 upset with himself and thinks he let the team down.鈥
On Saturday, EPL champion Chelsea suffered an embarrassing home defeat, having two men sent off as unfancied Burnley won 3-2 at Stamford Bridge.
Favorite Manchester City saw off promoted Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0, while Liverpool was held 3-3 at Watford and Wayne Rooney scored Everton鈥檚 winner on his return against Stoke.
