Ancelotti bemoans denied penalty
CHELSEA coach Carlo Ancelotti said his side deserved a penalty in the 2-1 Champions League last-16 defeat at Inter Milan on Wednesday and was confident his team would reach the quarterfinals.
Diego Milito gave the hosts an early lead in the first leg before Salomon Kalou equalized for the Premier League leaders and Esteban Cambiasso blasted a 55th-minute winner for Inter.
Kalou went down five meters out under Walter Samuel's challenge just before halftime at a rocking San Siro but his appeals were waved away.
"I think it was a penalty in the first half but it's a penalty when the referee whistles," Ancelotti said. "We wanted to play a game like we did. We did well, we leave with a result which is not positive but not dreadful.
"In the second game we will attack and try to score goals from the beginning until the end," added the Italian after his return to the famous stadium where he spent eight years as AC Milan coach.
Chelsea dominated for much of the first half with Didier Drogba crashing a free-kick against the bar among other chances.
"I think we can say we were unlucky this evening and we hope it will be better in the future. We played a good game, with personality and courage. We have to do the same in the next game with Inter," said Ancelotti of the second leg on March 16.
Inter coach Jose Mourinho, facing the side he led to two Premier League titles, was pleased with the result given the Italian champions went out to Liverpool and Manchester United at the same stage in the last two seasons.
"I have to control my emotions. I have to be professional like I was today and like the Chelsea players were. When I go to Stamford Bridge I expect people to be pleased to see me back because we were so happy together," the Portuguese said.
"The most important thing is the result, we are ahead. We think we can win. Last year at Manchester United we lost 2-0 but we had great chances... We hit the post three times. Obviously we can score away."
Inter striker Diego Milito netted on three minutes when he easily turned John Terry and fired in at the near post from six meters, prompting little reaction from Mourinho who had promised not to celebrate.
The Londoners dominated a thrilling game for long spells and Salomon Kalou deservedly equalized on 51 minutes with a 20-meter shot before Esteban Cambiasso soon put the hosts back ahead after his first shot was blocked.
Chelsea keeper Petr Cech was carried off on a stretcher in the second half with a calf injury.
Thiago Motta threaded the ball forward and Samuel Eto'o miscontrolled it before strike partner Milito confirmed his excellent form this season by cutting in from the left and beating Cech at the near post.
Chelsea's heads failed to drop despite the roar from the Inter crowd and they were soon troubling keeper Julio Cesar, playing despite being shaken in a car crash early this week.
Kalou then had a strong shout for a penalty turned down. The Ivorian had his reward after 51 minutes when Cesar failed to stop his curling shot through a crowd of players.
Argentine Cambiasso then grabbed the winner, blasting in at the second attempt from the edge of the box.
"I think on the balance of play, possession, the shots we had, we were the stronger team," said Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard. "We knew they like to soak up pressure and they got the early goal which made it easier for them but we've got an away goal and with a performance like that in London we've got a great chance."
