Ancelotti blasts stars after shock Cup defeat
PARIS Saint-Germain coach Carlo Ancelotti criticized his players for lack of concentration and "too much self-importance" after the team was knocked out of the French Cup in the quarterfinals.
"It is a huge disappointment especially because of the team's attitude," Ancelotti was quoted as saying in French media yesterday, the day after defeat on penalties at Evian Thonon Gaillard.
"There was no concentration, no character, too much self-importance," the Italian said. "The season is not finished but tonight is a disaster. I am sorry. It is my responsibility.
"Was it our worst game? Yes. Am I upset with the players? Yes. You can lose a game but not in this fashion."
PSG lost on penalties after Saber Khelifa had cancelled out Javier Pastore's brilliant early opener, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva both missing their attempts in the shootout.
The defeat ended the capital side's hopes of achieving a Ligue 1-Cup double, a week after it was eliminated in the Champions League quarterfinals 3-3 on aggregate by Barcelona. PSG leads Olympique Marseille by nine points with six games left in the Ligue 1 season.
Bordeaux is also through to the semifinal after winning 3-2 at second-division club Lens.
In Italy, two quick goals from Mattia Destro followed by a strike by Vasilis Torosidis gave AS Roma a 3-2 win away to Inter Milan on Wednesday to set up an Italian Cup final against neighbor and bitter rival Lazio.
Roma completed a 5-3 aggregate win in the two-leg semifinal against a sorry, injury-plagued Inter which has also been knocked out of the Europa League and seen its chances of Champions League football next season extinguished in the last month.
Inter was missing Diego Milito, Antonio Cassano, Rodrigo Palacio, Walter Gargano, Yuto Nagatomo and Dejan Stankovic via injury while Alvaro Pereira and Fredy Guarin were suspended.
