Anderlecht, Hapoel reach Champions playoffs

ANDERLECHT and Hapoel Tel Aviv reached the playoffs for the Champions League group stage with comfortable wins on Tuesday.

Hapoel Tel Aviv scored three times in the first 35 minutes to beat Aktobe 3-1 and advance past the Kazakh champion 3-2 on aggregate. Eran Zehavi, Ben Sahar and an own-goal by Khalifa Elhadj Ba put the Israeli side in control before Murat Tleshev scored a last-minute goal for Aktobe.

Anderlecht defeated The New Saints 3-0. Seventeen-year-old striker Romelu Lukaku scored twice in six minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute to lead the Belgian club to a 6-1 aggregate win.

Lukaku had been linked with a move away from Anderlecht following his breakthrough season but instead has extended his stay with the Belgian champion.

The pair will be in Friday's playoff draw, along with several highly ranked sides and the winners of Wednesday's 13 matches.

Rapid Vienna beat Beroe Stara Zagora 3-1 to advance 4-1 in the second-tier Europa League.

Nikica Jelavic scored a fifth-minute header and a 20-meter shot in the 60th before Markus Katzer made it 3-0 in the 71st with a shot from a tight left-wing angle.
