Anelka scores on debut but Shenhua beaten
FRENCH striker Nicolas Anelka found the net on his Chinese Super League debut yesterday but it was little consolation as Shanghai Shenhua lost 2-3 to Beijing Guo'an last night.
Former Shenhua player Mao Jianqing headed in the winner from a freekick in the 82nd minute to seal Beijing's victory. A little later, Shenhua midfielder Jiang Kun saw a straight red for tripping Xu Liang.
Shenhua coach Jean Tigana fielded Anelka for the first time yesterday despite the Frenchman reportedly struggling with a knee injury. The former Chelsea hitman did not play in the season opener against Jiangsu Sainty last Saturday which finished 1-1.
Anelka, the biggest name in the Chinese Super League, even took over the captain's armband from Yu Tao.
Shenhua nearly got the opener in the 36th minute when Feng Renliang blasted his shot over the bar from a rebound after Serbian midfielder Mario Bozic's freekick hit the bar.
Beijing then capitalized from Shenhua's Brazilian defender Moises Moura's mistake when his intended back pass found Piao Cheng who blasted in the first goal. Portugal forward Manu then made it 2-0 for Beijing in the 52nd minute.
But Shenhua was back in the game in a matter of minutes when it levelled the game 2-2.
Joel Griffith scored from the spot in the 62nd minute, and then in an identical mistake for Beijing's first goal, the Australian seized a back pass from Manu, which was blocked by Beijing keeper Hou Sen. Anelka, who was lurking close by, slotted it into the empty net.
Beijing's Portuguese coach Jaime Pacheco then sent in Mao as a 76th minute substitute, who scored the eventual winner.
Elsewhere, Guangzhou R&F grabbed the derby spoils after beating defending champion Guangzhou Evergrande 2-0 in a derby. R&F, which was promoted from the second division this year, sits on the top of the league after two rounds.
