Arsenal defender Vermaelen has injury setback

ARSENAL defender Thomas Vermaelen has had another injury setback, forcing manager Arsene Wenger to look for a replacement in the transfer market.

Vermaelen has been out with an Achilles' injury since September but had been expected to return in January.

Wenger says "he suffered another setback that we are concerned with. ... We are now in a position where we'll have to look around."

Arsenal has only two fit central defenders - Laurent Koscielny and Johan Djourou - after Sebastien Squillaci was sidelined for three weeks with a hamstring injury picked up during Saturday's draw against Leeds in the FA Cup.

Bolton defender Gary Cahill and Werder Bremen veteran Per Mertesacker have been linked to the Gunners.
