Arsenal through to FA Cup quarterfinals

Just as it did last weekend at Anfield, Liverpool got off to a flying start against Arsenal. But this time, the Gunners weathered the storm.

Arsene Wenger’s team was on the ropes in the early stages of a lively FA Cup tie, until Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored a goal against the run of the play. His strike shifted the momentum in the hosts’ favor and he set up another for Lukas Podolski as Arsenal won 2-1 to advance to the quarterfinals on Sunday.

Following their 5-1 thrashing at Anfield in the Premier League, when they conceded four goals in the opening 20 minutes, the Gunners got their revenge after surviving another sustained period of Liverpool pressure in the second half.

They will next face Everton at home after the Toffees booked their place with a 3-1 defeat of Swansea, while Manchester City will face Cup holder Wigan in a rematch of last year’s final.

“The intensity of the performance pleased me, I am very proud of the way we responded to the huge defeat that we had last week,” said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, chasing his first piece of silverware since the 2005 FA Cup.

In Spain, Karim Benzema and Jese Rodriguez scored early to help Real Madrid ease to a 3-0 win at Getafe and restore a three-way tie for first place in the Spanish league on Sunday.

Madrid’s win matched Barcelona and Atletico Madrid’s victories on Saturday to keep the trio level after 24 rounds, and 16 points clear of the nearest chaser Athletic Bilbao after it lost 1-2 to visiting Espanyol.

With leading scorer Cristiano Ronaldo serving the second of a three-game suspension, the 20-year-old Jese scored for a third straight round to get Madrid going in the fifth minute at Alfonso Perez Stadium.

Benzema made it 2-0 from Angel Di Maria’s pass in the 27th, and midfielder Luka Modric added another goal from long range in the 66th.

Also, Espanyol earned an entertaining win to deal Bilbao its first loss in 12 league games at its new San Mames Stadium, while Granada edged Real Betis 1-0 to leave the league’s bottom dweller 10 points from safety.

Valencia goalkeeper Diego Alves saved Ivan Rakitic’s 63rd-minute penalty kick in a 0-0 draw at Sevilla.

In Italy, Juventus eased to a 3-1 win over relegation-threatened Chievo Verona in Serie A. Juventus, which has now won all 12 of its home league matches this season, remained nine points clear of Roma, which beat Sampdoria 3-0 in the day’s late kickoff and has a game in hand. It was coach Antonio Conte’s 100th match in charge.

Napoli remained four points behind Roma after beating lowly Sassuolo 2-0. Earlier, Catania pulled off a surprise 3-1 victory over Lazio to move off bottom spot.
