Arsenal’s 2-0 win dents City’s title hopes

ARSENAL ended its streak of poor away performances against top teams as Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud scored in each half on Sunday for a 2-0 victory at Manchester City that dented the host’s title hopes.

Cazorla converted a penalty in the 24th minute and then sent in a pin-point freekick that Giroud headed in for the second in the 66th as Arsenal ended second-place City’s 12-game unbeaten run in all competitions.

City dominated possession but Arsenal for once showed the kind of defensive fortitude that so often has been missing in big away games in recent seasons. Arsenal lost 3-6 at City last season, to go with a 0-6 drubbing at Chelsea and 1-5 defeat at Liverpool.

With the loss, City fell five points behind leader Chelsea. Arsenal climbed above Tottenham into fifth place. In Sunday’s other game, West Ham also gave its European ambitions a boost as a superb second-half display saw the Hammers beat struggling Hull 3-0.

In Italy, Carlos Tevez scored twice to help Juventus beat Hellas Verona 4-0 and move five points clear at the top of Serie A. Earlier, Napoli beat Lazio 1-0 to leapfrog the Rome side into third spot, while Sampdoria remained firmly in the race for the final Champions League spot with a 2-0 win at Parma.

Troubled AC Milan lost 0-1 at home to relegation-threatened Atalanta and was whistled off the pitch by its fans.

In Spain, defending champion Atletico Madrid topped Granada 2-0, while Sevilla beat Malaga 2-0. Lionel Messi struck his 30th career hat-trick for Barcelona to spearhead its 4-0 rout at Deportivo La Coruna.
