Athletic win adds to Getafe’s woeful run

ATHLETIC Bilbao provisionally stretched its fourth-place advantage while compounding Getafe’s miserable run with a 1-0 victory in the Spanish league on Saturday.

Markel Susaeta curled home from a well-designed set-piece for the 40th-minute winner at San Mames to see Bilbao move nine points clear of Real Sociedad in the race to clinch the league’s final Champions League qualifying spot.

“We’re not a machine. The last game we scored four goals against Granada but today it was hard work,” Bilbao coach Ernesto Valverde said after his team stretched its unbeaten run to five games.

Getafe remained one point above the drop after its winless run was stretched to 14 games dating to November.

Earlier, Granada moved eight points clear of the relegation zone following a 1-0 victory against 10-man Elche, while Rayo Vallecano rallied for a 1-1 draw at Real Valladolid. Also, 10-man Levante held on for a scoreless draw at Espanyol.

In Germany, Bayern Munich left it late to grind out a 2-0 win in Mainz on Saturday and move one victory away from the Bundesliga title.

Bastian Schweinsteiger broke the deadlock in the 82nd minute and substitute Mario Goetze added another goal four minutes later to secure Bayern’s league-record 18th consecutive win and stretch its unbeaten run to 51 games — also a record.

Second-place Borussia Dortmund won 3-0 at Hannover but remained 23 points behind Bayern with eight games remaining.

Schalke consolidated third with a 3-1 win over bottom side Eintracht Braunschweig. Stuttgart beat 10-man Hamburger SV 1-0 to climb provisionally out of the relegation zone.
