Austin strike earns point for Saints

Charlie Austin scored on his second straight start for Southampton to earn the team a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth in the English Premier League yesterday.

Having netted twice against Everton last week on his only other start this season, Austin became Southampton’s top scorer for the present and underlined his reputation as the team’s most clinical finisher.

The striker showed his natural instincts in front of goal by steering in a right-wing cross from Nathan Redmond with a low finish that flew past Asmir Begovic in the 61st minute.

That canceled out the hosts’ goal by Ryan Fraser in the 42nd at Vitality Stadium.

Austin has had injury problems and also played second fiddle to Manolo Gabbiadini in the early part of this season. Yet he now has seven goals in his last 10 league starts for Southampton stretching back to last season.

Southampton moved up to 11th place and Bournemouth up to 14th, five points above the relegation zone.

On Saturday, Jose Mourinho finally won a big away game in the EPL after 18 months in charge of Manchester United.

But it came at a huge cost.

Paul Pogba was sent off for United in its 3-1 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium and, as a result, will miss the top-of-the-table derby against Manchester City next weekend.

The midfielder made a studs-first challenge on the leg of Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin in the 74th and immediately feared the worst. He sarcastically applauded the referee’s decision as he walked off.

Mourinho may be missing his best player for the biggest game of the season but he will nevertheless be relieved to have ended a run of seven away league games without a win against the rest of the so-called ‘Big 6’ in the EPL since taking over at United. His team scored only once in that sequence and the coach was widely criticized for his perceived negative tactics in those games.

Against Arsenal, United again defended in numbers — and required a slew of breathtaking saves from goalkeeper David De Gea — but was devastating on the break. Antonio Valencia and Jesse Lingard scored in the first half after defensive errors from the hosts, before Lingard added a third in the second half.

Alexandre Lacazette scored Arsenal’s only goal.

Second-place United trimmed the gap to City, which was playing West Ham United in yesterday’s late game, to five points.

Two more of the chasing pack, Liverpool and Chelsea, also won.

Eden Hazard scored twice in Chelsea’s 3-1 home win over Newcastle United.

Brazilian pair Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho sparkled for Liverpool in its 5-1 win at Brighton, the team’s biggest victory this season.
