Ba on the mend after surgery

FRENCH surgeon Olivier Bringer said the 3-hour surgery on Demba Ba’s fractured leg was successful, and it would be at least three months before the Senegal striker is able to kick the ball again.
Ba went under the knife at Putuo District People’s Hospital in Shanghai yesterday morning. The Shanghai Greenland Shenhua striker was anesthetized at 9:40am, with the surgery starting at 10:40am. The operation was completed at 1:55pm.
“The surgery went very well,” Bringer said after walking out of the operation theater. “It took a bit longer time than expected, as we wanted to make it perfect. We are very happy with the X-ray result of the fixing for the fracture. The success of the surgery has boosted our confidence that we will see Ba returning to competition.”
“We have had the fracture fixed with a nail inside. But the tibia takes at least three months to heal,” he added.
“So before three months, it is not possible for a player to play football. Then between three and six months, he will be able to play again. But for competition, it may take more time.”
Bringer said Ba would be able to move around in another half a month, even though the bone may not have healed by then.
Huashan Hospital expert Xia Jun compared Bringer’s “important” task in the surgery to Ba’s role for Shenhua during a match. Xia and a few experts from Huashan and Putuo hospitals assisted Bringer during the operation, which “went exactly according to the original plan”.
According to Shenhua General Manager Wu Xiaohui, Bringer did the stitches on the wound himself. “Bringer told me before the surgery that he would make it one of his most perfect operations,” Wu revealed.
Nearly 100 Greenland Shenhua fans showed up at the hospital in the morning to show their support for the 31-year-old, who suffered the horrific injury in a clash with Shanghai SIPG captain Sun Xiang during a Chinese Super League derby last Sunday.
Doctors said Ba will stay in the ICU for three days for observation. He will then spend another week in the hospital’s VIP ward before his family decides whether to move Ba to a medical center in Qatar for recovery.
