Ba to decide later in the day on surgery

SHANGHAI Greenland Shenhua's Senegal striker Demba Ba will decide later in the day today whether to have surgery on his fractured leg in Shanghai or in France.

Local doctors are however suggesting that going abroad in current condition may not be an option and are advising against it.

The 31-year-old forward was rushed to Putuo District People's Hospital after breaking his leg following a challenge by Shanghai SIPG captain Sun Xiang during the second half of Sunday’s derby match at Hongkou Football Stadium. X-ray results showed that he suffered tibia and fibula fracture in left leg.

Experts from Huashan and Changhai hospitals were brought in and Ba was given restoration treatment. Greenland Shenhua said the pain in Ba’s leg had eased by morning today and Ba was in stable mood and surrounded by his family.

Shenhua said Ba wanted to go back to France for the surgery, but Shanghai doctors suggested that he should not move around.

Ba’s test results were sent to a doctor in France and a decision accordingly would be taken later in the day.

The former Chelsea striker is currently the top scorer in the Chinese Super League with 14 goals. He is expected to be out of action for at least seven months.

Greenland Shenhua officials, coaches, players and fans have been spending time at the hospital since last night.

SIPG defender Sun Xiang also paid a visit to Ba in the hospital around noon today. The former Shanghai Shenhua player wished Ba a recover quickly on his official Weibo page.

"I watched the video and it is true I touched his leg when falling... As a professional player, the last thing we want to see is injury... I was concentrating on the ball and lost balance. It was not deliberate."
