Baggies top Sunderland to go third

WEST Bromwich Albion moved up to third in the English Premier League, at least until Chelsea plays today, when it won 4-2 at Sunderland in the early match yesterday.

A fourth successive league win moved West Brom on to 26 points from 13 matches, with only champion Manchester City (28) and Manchester United (27) above it.

Chelsea, which plays City at Stamford Bridge today, will move back above the Baggies if it wins its first match under interim manager Rafa Benitez and inflicts a first league defeat of the season on the champion.

West Brom, complete outsider at the start of the season, went ahead at the Stadium of Light with a superb shot from Zoltan Gera after 30 minutes which goalkeeper Simon Mignolet could only get a hand to.

Shane Long doubled the score a minute before the break when Mignolet failed to hold a shot from Chris Brunt, with Long left with the easiest of touches after the ball squirmed from Mignolet's reach.

Craig Gardner pulled a goal back for Sunderland with a deflected free kick before substitute Romelu Lukaku made it 3-1 from the penalty spot nine minutes from time.

Stephane Sessegnon gave the home side a glimmer of hope with its second three minutes from time, but West Brom made sure of the three points when substitute Marc-Antoine Fortune fired home with the last kick of the game.

On Friday, current and former Manchester United stars huddled under umbrellas outside Old Trafford for the unveiling of a 2.75-meter bronze statue of manager Alex Ferguson.

Eric Cantona, Peter Schmeichel and Ruud van Nistelrooy, as well as Wayne Rooney and the entire United first team squad were among the guests. Over 2,000 United fans also came, some carrying banners that read "Sir Alex the Great".

"Normally people die before they see their statue, I'm outliving death," said an emotional Ferguson, who has been United's manager for more than 26 years. Rain sprinkled onto the statue, which depicts the manager in typical Ferguson-fashion, arms crossed.

A plaque, which Ferguson unveiled with his wife Catherine, described her as "his greatest supporter". Ferguson said of his wife that "someone has to control me and she is the only one who can."

The statue has been placed in front of the "Sir Alex Ferguson Stand", which has two large pictures of Ferguson holding the Premier League and Champions Leagues trophies aloft.

The sculptor Philip Jackson said that he wanted to portray Ferguson's humor "so there's just a slight smile in the corner of his mouth".

Ferguson is the Premier League's most successful manager with 12 titles. Ferguson has also won the Champions League twice, and the FA Cup five times.
