Ballack on target for Leverkusen

MICHAEL Ballack and Sidney Sam scored against their former club as Bayer Leverkusen beat Kaiserslautern 2-0 in the German Bundesliga on Friday to gain a confidence-boosting win ahead of the Champions League encounter with Chelsea in midweek.

The 35-year-old Ballack, who won the German title with Kaiserslautern in 1998, gave the visitors a 54th-minute lead when goalkeeper Kevin Trapp let his 18-meter shot slip through his hands and roll in. Minutes earlier Trapp spectacularly saved a 22-meter Lars Bender missile.

Sam added a second goal in the 70th to end Kaiserslautern's four-game unbeaten run.

The win lifted last season's runner-up, which hosts Chelsea in their penultimate Group E match on Wednesday, into sixth place on 21 points from 13 games. Kaiserslautern is 12th on 13 points.

Leader Bayern Munich was entertaining champion Borussia Dortmund yesterday while third-placed Werder Bremen took on Borussia Moenchengladbach, in fourth.

In France, Stade Rennes rose to fourth in Ligue 1 with a 2-1 victory at Olympique Lyon on Friday while champion Lille drew 0-0 at Toulouse.

Lille, which visits CSKA Moscow on Tuesday desperate for a win to climb off the bottom of Champions League Group B, was held by sixth-placed Toulouse as it missed a chance to close the gap on leader Paris St Germain.

PSG is on 30 points and plays its game in hand against AS Nancy today. Lille, in third, has 25 points from 14 matches. Fifth-placed Lyon missed an opportunity to overtake Lille as it lost at home.
