Barca, Sevilla, Valencia advance in Cup
BARCELONA joined Sevilla and Valencia in the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey on Wednesday as goals from Bojan Krkic and Eidur Gudjohnsen gave it a 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid in its second leg at the Nou Camp.
The Primera Liga leader will face city rival Espanyol in the last eight, Sevilla plays Valencia, Real Mallorca takes on Real Betis and Sporting Gijon will face either Athletic Bilbao or Osasuna.
Atletico sparked hopes of an unlikely comeback from its 1-3 defeat in last week's first leg in Madrid when striker Florent Sinama Pongolle headed it in front on 24 minutes. But its chances were effectively snuffed out only a minute later when Krkic leapt to nod Silvinho's cross into the top corner past Gregory Coupet.
Atletico's woes were compounded when Sergio Aguero had to be replaced midway through the second half with the Argentine striker in some discomfort from what appeared to be leg cramps.
Barca made sure of progress soon after when Gudjohnsen drove the ball into the net after good work from Andres Iniesta down the left, condemning the visitors to a fourth straight defeat in all competitions. Luis Fabiano scored twice for Sevilla as the 2007 Cup winner brushed Deportivo Coruna aside 3-0 to run out 5-1 winners on aggregate.
But holder Valencia needed extra time to see off Racing Santander 3-1, two goals from Vicente and one from Joaquin sending it through to the last eight 4-2 on aggregate after both the first leg and the opening 90 minutes had ended 1-1.
In Italy, Brazilian forward Julio Baptista scored twice to help AS Roma beat Sampdoria 2-0 in the resumption of a Serie A match that was suspended in October due to torrential rain.
Baptista curved in a free-kick over Sampdoria's wall in the 21st minute, then dribbled past two defenders and found the target with a precise angled shot in the 53rd. The former Sevilla, Real Madrid and Arsenal player has now scored six goals this season ?? four in Serie A and two in the Champions League.
Also, Alessandro Del Piero scored once, set up another goal and hit the woodwork twice as Juventus beat Catania 3-0 to fill the final spot in the Italian Cup quarterfinals.
