Barca eight clear after Valladolid romp
BARCELONA swept aside Real Valladolid 3-0 away to move eight points clear at the top of La Liga on Saturday, reaching the mid-point of the season unbeaten for the first time.
Xavi, Daniel Alves and Lionel Messi scored to round off a positive week for the champion, in which coach Pep Guardiola ended speculation over his future by agreeing to a one-year contract extension.
Barca has 49 points from 19 games. Second-placed Real Madrid can cut its lead back to five when it hosts Malaga.
"It's no bad thing to finish the first half of the season unbeaten but it is little more than an anecdote. There are still many games to play," Guardiola told reporters.
As has happened in recent games, the Catalans were on the backfoot and struggling under some intense pressure from their hosts before they broke away to score in the 20th minute.
In the late game, Deportivo la Coruna overcame Athletic Bilbao 3-1 at home to climb to fourth on 34 points, but the game was overshadowed by the serious injury suffered by its defender Filipe.
The Brazilian scored the first goal in the 49th but broke his right leg near the ankle as he collided with the visiting goalkeeper, and was rushed to hospital.
Earlier, Sevilla beat Almeria 1-0 with an Alvaro Negredo goal after some quick thinking on a waterlogged pitch at the Sanchez Pizjuan, to go sixth with 33 points.
In Italy, John Arne Riise scored a last-gasp goal to earn AS Roma a 2-1 comeback win over free-falling Juventus in Serie A on Saturday and give Claudio Ranieri a sweet return to his former club.
The Norwegian nodded in a David Pizarro cross in stoppage time after a Francesco Totti penalty had canceled out Alessandro del Piero's fine opener for the hosts in the 51st.
The Turin side was down to 10 men when Roma scored the winner after goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon was sent off in the 83rd for charging out of his area and fouling Riise.
The win saw Roma tighten its grip on third place with 38 points from 21 games, eight behind leader Inter Milan, which was facing second-placed AC Milan in the high-stakes derby.
Juve is five points further back in fifth after a sixth loss in eight league games deepened the troubles of coach Ciro Ferrara, who replaced Ranieri just before the end of last season.
