Barca equals Real's La Liga record
BARCELONA'S 3-0 victory away to Hercules on Saturday was its 15th on the trot and assured it of another entry in the history books as it equalled the La Liga record set by Real Madrid in the 1960-61 season.
Pep Guardiola's side rub shoulders with the famous Real Madrid team which included Alfredo di Stefano, who had helped it to win the first five European Cups between 1956 and 1960.
"It's an immense honor to have 15 consecutive victories and to equal the record achieved by the Real Madrid of Di Stefano," Barca coach Pep Guardiola said.
"I am sure some team will equal it or pass it one day but it is something no one has managed for 50 years."
Barcelona started its run with a 2-1 victory at home to Valencia on October 16 and has gone on to rattle in 57 goals while conceding only six in its 15 matches.
Lionel Messi scored two late goals for the champion. Promoted Hercules had stunned Barcelona 2-0 win at the Nou Camp back in September, the only defeat the Catalans have suffered in the league this season.
Barcelona moved on to 58 points from 21 games, pulling seven clear of second-placed Real Madrid, which was to visit Osasuna late yesterday.
In the late game, Deportivo Coruna's Laure grabbed a hotly-disputed late equalizer in a 3-3 draw at home to 10-man Sevilla.
The linesman's flag was up when the fullback broke into the area to score but the referee overruled him prompting heated and lengthy complaints from the visitors. Television replays showed Laure to be onside when he received the ball.
Lassad had put Depor ahead with a spectacular strike early in the first half and, after Sevilla goalkeeper Andres Palop had been sent off for handball outside the area in the 57th minute, he doubled the lead just past the hour.
Earlier, struggling Sporting Gijon and Real Zaragoza notched their first wins on the road this season to climb away from the foot of the standings.
