Barca to face PSG in UCL last 16

Barcelona will face Paris Saint-Germain and former striker Neymar while title holder Bayern Munich is up against Italy鈥檚 Lazio in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League after the draw was held yesterday.

The clash of Lionel Messi and Barca with last year鈥檚 runner-up PSG is a repeat of their remarkable meeting at the same stage in 2017 when Barca overcame a 0-4 first-leg loss to beat the French club 6-1 in Spain with Neymar scoring twice for the Catalans.

鈥淲e know them (PSG) well, they鈥檝e got some exceptional players. Paris want to fight for the Champions League, last year they came very close to winning it and they want to go one better this time round, but we鈥檝e got something to say about that,鈥 said Guillermo Amor, Barcelona鈥檚 Director of Institutional Relations.

Bayern will start as favorite in their tie but will be wary of Simone Inzaghi鈥檚 Lazio team which has reached this stage for the first time in 20 years.

鈥淟azio are an uncomfortable opponent, you saw that in the group,鈥 said Bayern sports director Hasan Salihamidzic. 鈥淚t is always uncomfortable against Italian teams.鈥

English Premier League champion Liverpool will play last year鈥檚 semifinalist RB Leipzig creating a match-up between Germany鈥檚 most highly rated young coach Julian Nagelsmann of Leipzig with Liverpool鈥檚 Juergen Klopp, the country鈥檚 No. 1 coach.

Liverpool is unbeaten in its last ten matches against German teams in all European competitions, a run going back to 2002.

Real Madrid, a 13-time European champion, faces Serie A club Atalanta, which reached the last 8 in its first UCL campaign last season. Real has won ten of its last 11 games with Italian clubs.

Atletico Madrid will face Chelsea in a game which could include the return of striker Diego Costa to Stamford Bridge.

Manchester City will take on Borussia Moenchengladbach, which is in the last 16 for the first time in the UCL era.

Italian champion Juventus will face Porto, a game where Cristiano Ronaldo will return to his homeland Portugal.

The two legged ties will be played from February 16.

Meanwhile, Manchester United was handed a tough draw in the Europa League last 32 knockout stage where it will face current Spanish league leader Real Sociedad.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer鈥檚 side finished third in its UCL group and dropped into the second tier competition after last week鈥檚 defeat by Leipzig.

The clash with Sociedad will see United come up against former City favorite David Silva, now back in his homeland where he has inspired Sociedad to its excellent start to the domestic season.

The draw also produced a clash between two former European champions with AC Milan facing Serbia鈥檚 Red Star Belgrade while French league leader Lille faces Ajax in a fascinating tie.

EPL struggler Arsenal also has a tough draw against Portugal鈥檚 Benfica but its local rival Tottenham Hotspur, which is top of the league, will be happier with its tie against Austrian club Wolfsberger.
