Barcelona swoops in on Bird's Nest

CHAMPION Barcelona Football Club is expected to play at the Bird's Nest stadium in China this August, according to today's Oriental Morning Post.

Barcelona will play Beijing Guo'an, the defending champion of the Chinese Super League on August 8 as part of the annual celebration event of the Beijing Olympic Games at the National Stadium, the report said.

All the team's top players including 22-year-old World Player of the Year Lionel Messi are expected to show up for the game, according to the operator.

Details of the match will be officially announced next week. So far 30 percent of the club's appearances fee had been transferred to the club's bank account, the report says.

The National Stadium held the Super Cup between Italia Cup winner Lazio and Series A champion Inter Milan on August 8 2009, which was later proved to be a huge success with a record 50 million yuan (US$7.3 million) in ticket sales.

The match at the Bird's Nest would be the second Chinese trip for Barcelona in the past three years.
