Baros hangs up his boots

CZECH Republic striker Milan Baros has retired from international football.

The Czech team said Baros announced his decision to quit after the Czechs were eliminated from the European Championship following a 0-1 loss to Portugal in the quarterfinals in Warsaw, Poland, on Thursday.

"He only said it to the guys in the locker room, I can't quote him," team spokesman Jaroslav Kolar said.

The 30-year-old has been the second best Czech scorer of all time with 41 goals in 93 international games.

The best scorer, with five goals, at Euro 2004 who also won the Champions League with Liverpool, has been struggling in the national team in recent years and netted just once in the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign. He didn't score at the tournament and was repeatedly booed by fans.

Baros plays for Turkey's Galatasaray.

Baros' compatriot, defender Theodor Gebre Selassie, meanwhile, has agreed to move from Czech champion Liberec to Werder Bremen in the German Bundesliga.

Gebre Selassie's agent Viktor Kolar announced the transfer yesterday.

Both clubs have approved the move and Werder will sign Gebre Selassie to a 4-year contract after he undergoes a medical in Germany.

The 25-year-old has been a regular starter since he joined the national team last year for a 0-0 draw against Peru in a friendly.

He helped the Czechs qualify for the Euros and was one of their best players at the tournament.
