Batista flops on Shenhua debut
NEW coach but same old result for Shanghai Shenhua.
Argentine Sergio Batista had a miserable debut in the Chinese Super League as Shenhua lost 0-2 away to Changchun Yatai in pouring rain last night.
Neither of Shenhua's star strikers, Frenchman Nicolas Anelka or Australian Joel Griffiths, were in the squad to Changchun, northeast China's Jilin Province, due to injuries.
Batista set up a 4-5-1 line-up for Shenhua last night leaving French striker Mathieu Manset as the lone forward.
But the rainy weather and flooded pitch made it hard for Batista's players to carry out his Argentine-style moves.
Both of Yatai's goals came from corner kicks.
In the 10th minute, Brazilian defender Cassio Fernandes headed Wang Dong's corner kick into the net before Shenhua 'keeper Wang Dalei could come out and palm the ball away.
The second goal came in the 83rd, with Yatai midfielder Zhang Wenzhao striking a low shot from the edge of the Shenhua box from a tactical corner.
Without Anelka and Griffiths, Shenhua failed to create many chances.
In other 13th-round games yesterday, Liaoning Whowin beat Shandong Luneng 1-0 at home; Dalian Arbin scored a 2-1 win over Guangzhou R&F; Beijing Guo'an tied 0-0 with Qingdao Jonoon; and Henan Jianye lost 0-2 to Tianjin Teda at home.
The rest of the games are today. Marcello Lippi's Guangzhou Evergrande leads the table with 26 points. Beijing Guo'an and Guangzhou R&F are next on 25 and 24, respectively. Shenhua is 12th in the 16-team league.
