Bayern agrees to sell striker Gomez to Fiorentina
BAYERN Munich has agreed to sell Germany striker Mario Gomez to Italian club Fiorentina.
The Bundesliga side says on its website that Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge reached a deal with Fiorentina President Andrea Della Valle yesterday, with contracts to be finalized and signed soon.
Rummenigge says "it was Mario Gomez's wish to leave Bayern in the direction of Florence. We've now granted his wish."
Gomez joined Bayern from VfB Stuttgart for a then Bundesliga record fee of up to 35 million euros (US$45 million) in 2009.
Bild reports Fiorentina will pay Bayern 16 million euros rising up to 20 million euros for the 27-year-old forward.
Gomez scored 112 goals in 172 games for Bayern. But he spent much of last season as a reserve for Mario Mandzukic as Bayern claimed a Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League treble.
Meanwhile, former France defender Eric Abidal has rejoined big-spending Monaco on a one-year deal after his contract ended at Barcelona.
Monaco said on its website that the 33-year-old left back, who began his professional career with the team in 2000, was returning after 13 years with Lille, Olympique Lyon and Barcelona.
Abidal said an emotional farewell to Barcelona last month after the Spanish club decided not to renew his contract.
The defender, who won 61 caps for his country and played in the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, had fought his way back into the squad after having a liver transplant last year.
