Bayern beats Mainz 3-0 in Bundesliga
BAYERN Munich scored three second-half goals to beat Mainz 3-0 yesterday and regain first place in the Bundesliga, at least until Bayer Leverkusen plays Freiburg at home today.
Daniel van Buyten, Mario Gomez and Arjen Robben found the net for Bayern in a match that finished in heavy snowfall after teammate and goalkeeper Joerg Butt had missed a first-half penalty.
It was the seventh straight win for Bayern, which leads the standings with 42 points, one more than Leverkusen. Schalke beat Hoffenehim 2-0 in the late match to also move to 41 points.
"That was our best home game," Bayern coach Louis van Gaal said. "We created a lot of chances against a team that only defended. We scored good goals. I am very pleased."
Schalke's Kevin Kuranyi beat an offside trap in the 19th minute and lifted the ball over goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand for his 11th goal of the season. Lukas Schmitz doubled Schalke's lead with a deflected shot following an inept clearance after a corner, shortly after Hoffenheim had calls for a penalty denied.
Schalke has won five of its last six games. Hoffenheim has lost four straight, failing to score in its last three matches.
Werder Bremen dropped its fifth straight match by losing 4-3 at Borussia Moenchengladbach. Argentine forward Raul Bobadilla scored two goals and set up the two others for Moenchengladbach.
"It's really disappointing that we haven't learned from our mistakes but that we keep repeating them," Bremen defender Per Mertesacker said.
In other matches, Cologne won 2-1 at Eintracht Frankfurt, Nuremberg beat Hannover 3-1 after a hat trick from Albert Bunjaku in a match between two teams fighting to avoid demotion and last-place Hertha Berlin drew 0-0 at home with Bochum.
Bayern put Mainz under pressure from the opening whistle, with Gomez hitting the post from close range after good work by Robben.
Mainz goalkeeper Heinz Mueller saved with his feet Butt's weak shot from the penalty spot in the 32nd.
Mueller made an error to lead to Bayern's first goal, allowing a header from Van Buyten to slip through his hands into the net in the 58th.
With Mainz only seeking to limit the damage, Gomez doubled the lead in the 75th off a pass from Philipp Lahm. Robben completed the win in the 86th.
Franck Ribery, coming back after knee and other problems, played in the second half for Bayern.
Bobadilla, who had not scored in 10 games, got Moenchengladbach going by setting up the first two goals for Marco Reus and Roberto Colautti with runs down the right flank. The Argentine then made it 3-0 in the 18th despite being surrounded by three defenders.
Mesut Oezil pulled one back for Bremen before Bobadilla scored again in the 35th. Claudio Pizarro cut Bremen's deficit before halftime, and Torsten Frings converted a late penalty as Bremen tried in vain to salvage a draw.
New Nuremberg coach Dieter Hecking returned to his old club and saw his team secure an impressive win through Bunjaku's three goals, which raised the striker's season total to nine.
Hannover, which also has a new coach in Mirko Slomka, is now winless in nine games. Both teams are in the relegation zone.
Portuguese midfielder Maniche opened the scoring for Cologne in Frankfurt before Brazilian defender Chris equalized.
