Bayern beats Stuttgart 5-1 in German Cup
DEFENDING champion Bayern Munich reached the German Cup quarterfinals with an impressive 5-1 victory at Stuttgart behind two goals from Bastian Schweinsteiger yesterday.
Bayern impressed in its first competitive game in nearly six weeks, and Juergen Klinsmann's team remained unbeaten for four months.
"I was surprised how convincing it was," Klinsmann said. "We noticed from their formation that they had respect for us, that they were cautious so we went strongly from the start."
Stuttgart suffered its first defeat since Markus Babbel took over as coach in late November.
"It was bitter, we had too much fear and no passion," Babbel said. "I think my players had too much respect and never got into the game against this classy Bayern team. We had no chance tonight."
Schweinsteiger opened the scoring in the 14th minute, Franck Ribery made it 2-0, then wasted a penalty in the 21st with a careless shot. Luca Toni used a pass from Ribery to make it 3-0 in the 43rd. Schweinsteiger scored from another penalty in the 55th and Ze Roberto added the fifth in the 59th. Mario Gomez notched one for Stuttgart in the 85th.
"We displayed our qualities tonight," Schweinsteiger said. "All of us were hot, but we can play even better."
In other third-round games, Hamburger SV beat second-division 1860 Munich 3-1 with a hat trick from Ivica Olic, and Schalke beat third-division Carl Zeiss Jena 4-1 in a match both teams ended with 10 men. Mainz won 3-1 in Freiburg in a match between two second-division teams. Four more games are today.
In Stuttgart, Bayern stunned the home side with two early goals and Stuttgart did not create a chance during the entire first half.
Bayern's Martin Demichelis, left unmarked, headed high from close range after 10 minutes as Bayern quickly put its stamp on the game.
Arthur Boka gave away the ball to allow Schweinsteiger to beat Jens Lehmann with a good shot inside the far post.
Two minutes later, Ribery began the move that led to Bayern's second goal, feeding Ze Roberto on the left flank. The Brazilian crossed to the far post, Miroslav Klose failed to connect with a header but Toni put the ball back in front of the goal for Ribery to score from close range.
Ribery took the penalty after Boka had handled the ball following a tackle from Klose. Ribery tried to fake Lehmann but chipped the ball straight into the Stuttgart goalkeeper's arms.
The Frenchman redeemed himself somewhat with a good pass to Toni for Bayern's third goal.
Stuttgart began with more ambition after the break, inserting a second striker, and had a score disallowed for offside.
It was Bayern, however, which scored next when Klose put through Ze Roberto, who was downed by Lehmann to earn Bayern's second penalty. Schweinsteiger took it this time and sent Lehmann the wrong way for 4-0.
Gomez hit the crossbar before Ze Roberto notched the fifth following a clever pass from Toni.
Landon Donovan went in for Toni in the 67th and narrowly missed the target off a pass from Ribery only one minute into his official debut for Bayern. The American was on a short contract until March, when he was slated to return to the Los Angeles Galaxy. But Bayern will probably seek to keep him until the end of the season, if not longer.
Ciprian Marica hit the crossbar again for Stuttgart as Bayern slowed down and Gomez took advantage of some sloppy Bayern defending to score from close range five minutes from the end.
In Hamburg, Olic scored late in the first half and added two more after the break to lead Hamburg over the other team from Munich.
Hamburg hosts Bayern in the opening match on Friday of the second half of the Bundesliga season. Olic, who will move to Bayern next season, was suspended from that game.
In Jena, Jefferson Farfan scored twice for Schalke, which also got goals from Ivan Rakitic and Kevin Kuranyi. Gerald Asamoah and Jena's Marco Riemer were sent off late in the match in separate incidents.
